One night during our 13 months of tornado displacement, I couldn't sleep, and tired of fighting insomnia, I went to the makeshift art studio (the laundry room in our rental house) and began painting. I don't know why, but I started with sharp, curt brushstrokes alternating in 90-degree angles in the middle of the canvas. Dabbling in blues of cobalt, phthalo, Prussian, ultra-marine, and white, I kept expanding out over the silhouetted hills. I finished the tedious, repetitive, short strokes of the beaming night sky, and with my hand aching, I finally went to sleep in peace.

Dr. Sheila Delony asked me to create the cover art for her book, "This Year, Lord: Teachers' Prayers of Blessing, Liturgy, and Lament." She didn't know exactly what she wanted for the cover, but she knew what she didn't want: stock images of desks, or apples, or #2 pencils. As Sheila hailed from west Texas, I wanted to try and convey an open sky and a big, parading sun. The bottom third of my original draft fell flat, but that sun radiating way up there in the sky refused to budge. That's when the barbed-wire fence made a brief cameo, disappearing over the horizon into the next unknown.

Our historic neighborhood in east Nashville will never look the same after the March 3, 2020 F-3 tornado that came through. Besides the nearly 100-year-old homes that were destroyed or had to be torn down, the image that was, and still is, the most difficult for Danielle and I is the erasing of the horizon line. Dozens of trees, possibly hundreds, if not felled by the 150+ mph winds, had to be taken down due to their being damaged. The horizon line around our home, once a lush and confining background, became wide open overnight. Nearly two years later, it remains a shocking and disappointing sight. One of the prerequisites in our home search nearly two decades ago was the presence of tall, old trees. East Nashville, located two miles from downtown, checked that box with trees in abundance. So many of our immediate neighbors also found themselves without a home, or a severely damaged one that night. As the days and weeks passed, we got to know our neighbors better, and as we shared survival stories of that experience, we marveled at one another with a similar refrain, "How are you still alive??" We're still standing.

I had been practicing diluting acrylics and making paint drip and trickle down (or up, or across) the surface. As with any work, these experiments were met with occasional success, and many disappointing results. If I remember correctly, this painting went through a few iterations before this, its final state. The light tones within the dark Prussian blue along the crest were the final touches.
