One night during our 13 months of tornado displacement, I couldn't sleep, and tired of fighting insomnia, I went to the makeshift art studio (the laundry room in our rental house) and began painting. I don't know why, but I started with sharp, curt brushstrokes alternating in 90-degree angles in the middle of the canvas. Dabbling in blues of cobalt, phthalo, Prussian, ultra-marine, and white, I kept expanding out over the silhouetted hills. I finished the tedious, repetitive, short strokes of the beaming night sky, and with my hand aching, I finally went to sleep in peace.
